CVC Cardiovascular Health Foundation Announces Newly Endowed Chair in Cardiovascular Science

On Monday, March 18th, 2024 The CVC Cardiovascular Health Foundation (CVCF) announced a $5-millon donation that will fund a new research chair in cardiovascular science in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry (FoMD).

In addition to supporting critical advancements in research and health outcomes for patients, this initiative will foster collaborative engagement across disciplines within the FoMD, College of Health Sciences, and other agencies. The new chair, who will be recruited from outside of the U of A, will bring a fresh perspective and unique talents to help advance the CVC’s ongoing work in cardiovascular research and clinical trials. Furthermore, their mandate will include expanding national and international research partnerships, building upon past projects the CVC has undertaken with a number of institutions from around the world.

According to Dr. Paul Armstrong, CVC Founding Director and Director of the CVCF, “the CVC and the U of A foster the ideal environment for turning research into real-world applications. The support of Dr. Narmin Kassam, Chair of the Department of Medicine, was pivotal in establishing this position. The university is known as a leader in cardiovascular medicine and other research domains, possesses strong epidemiology and population health expertise, complementing the CVC’s renowned track record of initiating novel clinical trials, analyzing and disseminating the resulting knowledge as part of their social contract to enhance the learning health care system. The new chair will be a catalytic convertor to ‘put all the pieces together’.”
